Sea of Lightning emerged from a collaboration with a scientist researching lightning storms in the Mediterranean Sea. The work draws a connection to land artist Walter De Maria’s The Lightning Field (1977), which consisted of vertical metal rods forming a magnetic field of lightning collectors. In my work, De Maria’s lightning field is immersed in seawater and becomes a site for scientific inquiry. On another level, the poles appear to lift the sea’s waves, probing its hidden depths.
